History of the institute

Kharkiv is Ukraine's "Tank City". This is where the legendary T-34, T-64 and T-84 tanks were designed, and where tank commanders were trained. On 23 August 1943, on the basis of the 33rd Guards Tank Brigade, the Guards Kharkiv Tank School was formed — the direct predecessor of today's VITV. Its first graduation of 247 tank officers took place as early as 19 March 1945.

On 19 September 1997, Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 1036 transformed the school into the Kharkiv Institute of Tank Troops. This date is the institution's official Founding Day. In 2003 the institute joined NTU "KhPI", and under Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 549 of 19 July 2017 it gained the status of the Military Institute of Tank Troops. On 24 August 2017, the President of Ukraine presented the institute with its Battle Flag.

From the very first hours of the full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, institute personnel with 16 tanks and roughly 20 armored vehicles took up the defense of Kharkiv. On 6 March 2022, almost 200 officers graduated early from the institute — straight from combat positions. For its combat service, the institute was awarded the distinction "For Participation in the Defense of Ukraine. Kharkiv 2022".
