Why UMMA

The only one in Ukraine

UMMA is the only higher military medical institution of accreditation level IV in the country. It trains specialists for all branches of the AFU, the National Guard, the SBU and other security agencies.

Narrow combat specialization

14 specialized fields unavailable at civilian universities: aviation medicine, maritime medicine, psychophysiology, military toxicology and radiology.

Clinical base at the Main Military Clinical Hospital

Practical training takes place directly at the Main Military Clinical Hospital — the largest in the country. Real clinical experience from day one.

Research and publishing base

Its own research center, publisher of the "Ukrainian Medical Journal" and "Problems of Military Health Care." 45 Doctors of Science and 77 Candidates of Science among the teaching staff.

A veteran environment

Among the instructors are physicians with combat experience, participants of the ATO/JFO and the full-scale invasion. Tactical medicine is taught by those who applied it at the front.

International training

Partnership with the David Nott Foundation, ACDC, and ASSET (NATO). Surgeons train to the standards of the American College of Surgeons — the NATO "gold standard" of training.

Alma mater of military medicine

30 years standing guard over the army's health.

The Ukrainian Military Medical Academy was born together with the independent Armed Forces. In 1993, when the army was still only taking shape, the need arose for its own system of training military medics — and the first 25 specialists received their diplomas as early as 1995.

Over three decades, the academy has trained more than 3,500 physicians, surgeons, pharmacists and narrow-profile specialists. Its faculty have defended 45 doctoral and 77 candidate dissertations. Today UMMA graduates save the wounded on every front-line sector.

The full-scale invasion of 2022 turned the academy into a center of accelerated training: shortened courses, NATO-standard tactical medicine, ASSET and TCCC — UMMA quickly adapted its programmes to the realities of modern war.

1993 First intake of students — 13 August 1993. An organizational group at the Bohomolets National Medical University
1995 First graduation — 25 military medical specialists received diplomas
1996 Establishment of the Military Medical Institute (1 May 1996)
1998 Reorganization into the Ukrainian Military Medical Academy (1 March 1998). Presentation of the Battle Flag (3 June 1999)
2014+ ATO/JFO experience: introduction of tactical medicine, TCCC, combat trauma protocols
2022+ Accelerated programmes, ASSET (NATO), partnership with the David Nott Foundation and the ACS. Training surgeons to the NATO "gold standard"

Paths to UMMA

1

Important condition

UMMA does not admit applicants directly after 11th grade. Admission requires a higher medical education (a physician's or pharmacist's diploma) with primary specialization (internship). The academy is a postgraduate level of training, an analogue of residency, but for medical service officers.

2

Career medical service officer

A physician's/pharmacist's diploma (master's degree) and primary specialization (internship). Age: up to 30 for civilians, up to 35 for service members. Documents are accepted until 25 June. Selection includes psychological testing, physical fitness and a military medical board (VLK). The result is an officer's rank and a specialization.

3

Reserve medical service officer

For reservist physicians and pharmacists. Study lasts 4 years (physicians) or 3 years (dentists, pharmacists) — a distance course plus an 18-day training camp at UMMA, without leaving one's civilian job. After passing exams, the rank of junior lieutenant is conferred. Documents are accepted at the academy's email address.

4

Check the requirements

Make sure you hold a physician's/pharmacist's diploma and have completed an internship. Your age and medical condition meet the requirements.

5

Submit your documents

By 25 June, through the TCC and social support center or directly to the UMMA admissions board. The list of documents is on the official website.

6

Pass the selection process

Assessment of your educational and professional level, psychological examination, physical fitness, and a medical examination by the military medical board.
