Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Ground Forces Academy — your start to an officer career
The Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Ground Forces Academy — your path to an officer career.
The Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Ground Forces Academy in Lviv is one of the leading higher military educational institutions of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, training officers for the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Academy has deep historical traditions of military education, dating back to the late 19th century, and has held the honorary status of “national” since 2015. Training lasts 4 years, after which cadets receive a bachelor's degree, the rank of lieutenant, and a guaranteed appointment to officer positions according to their academic ranking.
The Academy trains officer specialists in several main tracks. Cadets can gain professional competencies in commanding mechanized and tank unit operations, commanding artillery units, organizing engineering unit operations, troop support — personnel, mobilization, and organizational-staff work — as well as in the moral and psychological support of units and military culturology. These educational programs shape officers ready for command or staff duties at the tactical level.
Training combines fundamental military preparation, physical development, and specialized disciplines that meet military standards and the needs of modern defense. Cadets acquire the knowledge and skills needed to work with complex technical equipment, command units, and support personnel under the stressful conditions of service.
To enter the Academy, applicants must have a complete secondary education or a college diploma, be medically fit for service, and successfully pass a professional-psychological screening and a military medical commission. After that, the future cadet receives an invitation to participate in the competition. Based on this invitation, the applicant arrives at the Academy, where they submit original documents, results of the national multi-subject test or take internal entrance exams, undergo physical and psychological tests, and a final medical examination. If all stages are successfully completed, the candidate is enrolled.
The Academy also has a Military College for sergeants, which trains professional sergeants for units of the Ground Forces. This training is oriented toward practical application, developing leadership qualities, and managing personnel in combat and rear conditions.
In addition to primary officer training, the Academy also offers military training under reserve officer programs. This form of training usually lasts two years and involves weekly classes, training in military specialties, and passing the relevant tests. During training, conscription for compulsory service is suspended, and completing the program allows one to gain the knowledge needed for further service or contract.
During martial law, the admission process sometimes allows entry to the Academy not only based on national multi-subject test results, but also through internal exams held directly at the institution, giving a chance even to those who didn't register for the multi-subject test.
The Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Ground Forces Academy is more than just an educational institution. It's a place where the military elite is formed, where leadership skills, tactical thinking, and combat readiness are acquired. If you dream of becoming an officer and serving Ukraine, the Academy could be your first and important step on this path.
