12 Separate heavy mechanized brigade

The 12th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade is a combat unit of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which combines experience, modern technologies, professional training and teamwork.

The brigade unites servicemen of various specialties — from mechanics, drivers and operators of unmanned systems to doctors, signalers, EW specialists, commanders and other specialists. Each position has its own tasks, but the common goal is the same — to effectively perform the tasks and strengthen the defense capability of Ukraine.

The history of the creation of the 12th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade dates back to the formation of the new architecture of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, when the experience of combat operations required the strengthening of mechanized units capable of acting decisively, coherently and effectively in the conditions of modern warfare.

The basis for the formation of the brigade was the cadre of the 12th Separate Tank Battalion, which was created on December 29, 2017 on the territory of Chernihiv region. The formation of the unit took place with the participation of the 1st Separate Tank Seversk Brigade, according to the joint directive of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Subsequently, the battalion developed, underwent stages of organizational formation and build-up of combat capabilities. From December 30, 2018, the cadre of the 12th Separate Tank Battalion was reorganized into the 12th Separate Tank Battalion in accordance with the requirements of the joint directive of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

On July 15, 2025, the President of Ukraine presented the Battle Flag to the tank battalion — an honorary symbol of military honor, valor and glory, which embodies the history and merits of the unit and recalls the dutyto protect the Motherland.

On July 27, 2025, based on the acquired combat experience and in accordance with the directive of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the 12th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade was formed. After its creation, the brigade began the process of staffing, forming the main units and deploying a full-fledged management structure.

The day of the military unit is December 30, the date symbolizing the beginning of the formation of the unit and the formation of its combat traditions.
