127th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade

127th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade

of the 11th Army Corps of the "East" Operational Command

of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The brigade was formed in early March 2022 under the command of Colonel Roman Hryshchenko. Initially it consisted of a headquarters and two battalions. In July 2022, the brigade held the front line of defense in the north and east of Kharkiv. In September 2022, the brigade's units took part in the counteroffensive in Kharkiv Oblast, liberating several settlements. In February 2023, the brigade received FV103 Spartan armored personnel carriers, becoming the first mechanized territorial defense brigade in Ukraine. In July 2023, the 225th Battalion was withdrawn from the brigade and transformed into a separate assault battalion of the Ground Forces.

The structure of the 127th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade (127 OVMBr) was formed in accordance with standard organizational structures of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Based on official and open sources, the brigade's main units include:
225th Battalion;
226th Battalion;
227th Battalion;
228th Battalion;
229th Battalion;
247th Battalion;
249th Battalion (a newer unit).

FV103 Spartan — light British armored personnel carrier;
MT-LB — captured Soviet-era vehicle;
BTR-60 / BTR-70 (possibly in service with some battalions);
HMMWV — American armored jeeps;
Captured equipment — seized during the fighting in Kharkiv Oblast.

The brigade's sleeve patch is shaped like a light brown British-style shield with a dark brown crenellated wall. In the center is a stylized rendering of the word "Kharkiv" in the shape of the Ukrainian trident. At the bottom of the trident is a circle with the brigade's number "127" and the abbreviation "TrO" (Territorial Defense).
The battle flag was presented to the brigade on September 29, 2022. This symbol of honor and valor was consecrated by Metropolitan Epifaniy of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, underscoring the unit's spiritual support and moral resilience.

The brigade's founding anniversary is marked on March 12. In 2025, the brigade celebrated the third anniversary of its founding, an important event for its personnel and the residents of Kharkiv.

Participation in religious rites: The brigade's chaplains actively take part in the unit's religious life. In particular, they have conducted Easter services and the blessing of paskas (Easter bread), which helps foster spiritual unity among the soldiers and supports morale.
