54th Separate Mechanized Brigade

The 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Hetman Ivan Mazepa is a mechanized formation of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, brigade-sized. Subordinated to the "East" Operational Command.

The brigade bears the name of Ivan Mazepa — a Ukrainian military, political, and state figure, Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host.

In December 2014, the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade was formed in Artemivsk.

The 25th Separate Motorized Infantry Battalion "Kyivan Rus" also joined the 54th OMBr.

On December 18, 2016, the brigade's units, having withstood an artillery bombardment, repelled an attack by pro-Russian militants and, counterattacking, seized the enemy's positions.

In late October 2017, the brigade returned to the front line on the "Svitlodarsk Bulge."

On November 22, 2017, the brigade's soldiers liberated the villages of Hladosove and Travneve, north of Horlivka.

On May 5, 2018, during a raid, one of the units of the brigade's 25th Separate Motorized Infantry Battalion captured a militant from the so-called 3rd battalion of the 7th Motor Rifle Brigade of the Russian terrorist forces.

On June 15, 2018, the brigade's units returned from the Joint Forces Operation zone, where they had carried out missions for 8 months on the Svitlodarsk Bulge. During the rotation, 170 militants of Russian terrorist groups and 19 pieces of enemy equipment were neutralized, three of the occupier's forward positions were destroyed, and two settlements — Hladosove and Travneve — were brought under control.

In mid-July 2019, soldiers of the 54th Brigade carried out an operation in Donbas, destroying an occupier base holding military equipment and enemy personnel — the enemy suffered 20 killed and 11 wounded.

On May 6, 2020, the brigade received its honorary name in honor of Ivan Mazepa.

On December 6, 2022, the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Hetman Ivan Mazepa of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was awarded the honorary distinction "For Courage and Valor" by decree of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The brigade's motto: "By the saber we hold our right" — a line from the duma of Ivan Mazepa, emphasizing readiness to defend freedom and rights with weapons in hand.

Sleeve patch: The brigade's chevron features the "Kurcz" coat of arms, used by the Volhynian princes Kurcewicz, descendants of the Gediminids. This coat of arms became a symbol not only of noble families of Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine, but also of Hetman Mazepa himself.

The brigade maintains an active presence on social media, particularly on Facebook, where it regularly publishes news about its activities, achievements, and needs.

Thus, the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Hetman Ivan Mazepa combines deep historical heritage with modern combat traditions, which helps strengthen the unit's fighting spirit and cohesion.
