53rd Separate Mechanized Brigade
53rd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Prince Volodymyr Monomakh is a military unit of Ukraine's mechanized troops, brigade-sized. Permanent duty station — the cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, Luhansk Oblast. Subordinated to the "East" Operational Command.
The brigade was formed after the start of Russian aggression, in the autumn of 2014. It included motorized infantry battalions and former territorial defense battalions.
The brigade bears the name of Volodymyr Monomakh — the Grand Prince of Kyiv, ruler of Rus in the 12th century.
The formation of the brigade began in the autumn of 2014 in the village of Nova Liubomyrka, Rivne Oblast. Some territorial defense battalions and units transferred from the 30th OMBr, 17th OTBr, 1st OTBr, and 24th OMBr were incorporated into the newly formed brigade.
By the end of 2014, the brigade had reached the settlement of Stanytsia Luhanska in Luhansk Oblast, and already in 2015 it was defending the line Avdiivka — Verkhniotoretske — Novhorodske (New York) in Donetsk Oblast. It was here that the 3rd battalion of the 53rd OMBr particularly distinguished itself.
As of May 2016, the 24th Separate Assault Battalion and the 43rd Separate Motorized Infantry Battalion were subordinated to the brigade.
To carry out combat missions, two battalion tactical groups were formed from the brigade's units, each consisting of: a mechanized battalion (three companies), a 2S1 "Gvozdika" battery, a reconnaissance platoon, a MANPADS platoon, a ZU-23-2 platoon, and a mortar battery.
From April to October 2017, the brigade's units held positions on the Svitlodarsk Bulge. In early November 2017, the brigade's units were withdrawn from the ATO zone for rest and to restore combat readiness at a training ground in the settlement of Cherkaske, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
From March 2018, the brigade again carried out combat missions in the East along the Siverskyi Donets River, from Orikhove (Popasna district) to Slovianoserbsk, Luhansk Oblast.
In 2019, the brigade's units were deployed to the combat zone, in the Horlivka area.
On October 29, 2019, the brigade's units left the combat zone for rotation. During this time, the brigade lost 7 servicemen killed.
On May 6, 2020, the President of Ukraine granted the brigade the honorary name in honor of Volodymyr Monomakh.
