10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade
This is an elite unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, renowned for its endurance, professionalism, and fighting spirit. Permanent duty station – Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.
The unit's mission is to conduct combat operations in mountainous terrain, airborne operations, reconnaissance, sabotage, and other special tasks.
The battalion was formed on December 11, 2016, growing from a small unit into a fully capable combat force. The unit inherited the glorious traditions of Ukrainian mountain troops, rooted in the Ukrainian Galician Army and other historical formations. As a result of Armed Forces reforms, the battalion underwent significant modernization, rearmament, and reorganization.
The battalion's soldiers undergo rigorous physical and combat training, enabling them to operate effectively in the most difficult conditions. They are devoted to their country and ready to defend it to their last breath. The unit has significant combat experience, which continues to grow.
10 OGShB is the pride of the Ukrainian military, a model of courage and dedication. Its contribution to the defense of Ukraine is invaluable.
At the initial stage, the 10th Mountain Infantry Regiment was created, based in Chernivtsi. On September 21, 2015, at a press conference in Ivano-Frankivsk, military officials announced the decision to form a new mountain assault brigade numbered 10. An old military base in the city of Kolomyia was chosen as the deployment site. The brigade's commander became Hero of Ukraine Lieutenant Colonel Vasyl Zubanych, who had previously commanded the 15th Separate Mountain Infantry Battalion and later the 10th Mountain Infantry Regiment itself.
The brigade's fighters made their first training climb into the mountains on January 13, 2017, taking Mount Velykyi Verkh. The ascent took 8 hours. In the second half of February that year, the brigade's servicemen climbed Hoverla, raising the State Flag at the summit in honor of those who died on the Debaltseve bridgehead. The climb up took 5 hours, the descent 2 hours.
In March 2016, it was reported that the "Aidar" and "Donbas-Ukraine" volunteer battalions would join the newly formed 10th Mountain Assault Brigade. In January 2017, it became known that these units had been withdrawn from the brigade. During the time spent in the combat zone in Donbas during the first rotation, the brigade lost 22 people killed.
On May 4, 2018, after completing a combat mission in Donbas, the brigade returned to its permanent duty station. The soldiers were solemnly welcomed near the city hall in Kolomyia. For nine months, fighters of the 109th, 108th, and 8th battalions held the front line — near Popasna and Zolote.
On August 24, 2018, on Ukraine's Independence Day, President Petro Poroshenko presented battle flags to the 8th, 108th, and 109th separate mountain assault battalions. This made the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade the only one in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in which all of its separate units have battle flags.

Fighters actively use modern technology, including unmanned aerial vehicles and robotic systems. These innovative solutions allow them to gather intelligence, adjust artillery fire, and destroy the enemy with minimal losses.
On February 14, 2023, "in view of the exemplary performance of assigned tasks in defending the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine," by Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 80/2023, the brigade was given the honorary name "Edelweiss."
The sleeve patches of the brigade and its battalions were approved on November 2, 2018. The brigade's symbol is the emblem of the mountain infantry units (an edelweiss flower and crossed ice axes) on a shield bearing the brigade's number in Roman numeral "X" at the bottom. On November 9, by order of the commander, the motto "With the shield, or on it" was approved for all units of the brigade, including its separate battalions.
